San Giovanni d'Asso is south of Asciano (South Tuscany) and where the Tartufo Bianco Festival takes place on two weekends in November each year - a more village style affair than than the bigger town festivals. It's even possible to get a steam train there if you have a lot of time on your hands. To price, buy or arrange to watch truffle hunters and their dogs at work, or just find out more about local products, try ........
though it has to be said that the town's web-making ability is but a shadow of its skill at hunting for truffles.

The prize arrives back in Castellina (and is later cut and set to work truffling the egg waiting on the left) - also shown above the famous Pienza Pecorino (sheep's) cheese - this one a tasty little "riserva" |
