ST CATHERINE’S MONASTERY, MT SINAI,

1936 EXPEDITION

In November 1936 my grandmother  Clare Sproule was one of a group of 10 Cairo based British Army personnel, wives and daughters who undertook an expedition to St Catherine’s Monastery, Mount Sinai.  This ancient pilgrimage destination, the place where “God spoke to Moses”, was built in AD 530 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian.  It was located 250 miles away from Cairo over mostly desert tracks.  They took 3 cars and a “lorry” (pick up truck).

Here are her photographs.

PETRA - 1937 EXPEDITION

Encouraged by the St Cats experience, 5 of the original expedition  members – Clare, Colonel Tommy Marsden and his wife Bene, Colonel Barnes and Cpl Tendridge – headed off to explore the Nabertean cave City of Petra during February / March 1937.

Many of the photos in Clare’s photo album of this trip were hand coloured by her.  The album also has a finely drawn annotated map and historical notes.
