The Chapter House Fresco Mystery

The soaring fan vaulting of the chapter house  ceiling - then something unusual as the eye drops to the blind arcading around the walls .....

 

Wall paintings ..... surely not, in an English Cathedral, I hear you say ...... particularly ones with such a Giottoesque look about the faces ......

 

Then the mystery is solved by a helpful guide - this is the left behind set used earlier in 2005 for the filming of "The da Vinci Code" when, for a short time, this place became Westminster Abbey (which in fact is the only major British church with bits and pieces of paintings in the chapter house).  The magnificent  "marble" tombs on the way in to the Chapter House (below left) also produce a hollow plywood ring when rapped. 

 

The ugly signs blue-tacked onto the 600 year old marble columns say "do not touch the paintings" - maybe they should be blue- tacked onto the paintings with a notice "do not touch the 600 year old marble".
